Bid debrief

Turn the result into something useful for the next bid

Whether you won, lost or came away with feedback that did not really explain anything, we help you work out what the result is actually telling you, what is worth changing and what you should keep doing.

A debrief is useful in more than one situation

The result landed. Now what?

01

You lost and want to know what actually cost you marks

We separate the things that genuinely weakened the submission from the bits that are frustrating but unlikely to have changed the outcome.

02

You won, but there is still useful feedback in the score

Winning does not mean every answer worked equally well. A debrief can show what to repeat next time and where there was still avoidable leakage.

03

The feedback is vague, contradictory or hard to do anything with

We help you translate evaluator comments and scoring into something your bid team can actually use, rather than filing it away and moving on.

What we look at

The feedback matters, but it is only one part of the picture

We look at the result alongside the submission and the evaluation criteria so the comments have context. The aim is to understand what the evaluator could see, where confidence may have dropped and which lessons are actually worth taking forward.

01
Scores and evaluator comments

Where marks moved, what the evaluator explicitly liked or disliked and which comments are genuinely actionable.

02
The submitted answers

Whether the response actually demonstrated the things the feedback says were missing, weak or unclear.

03
The question and scoring criteria

What the buyer asked for, what they said they would score and whether the response made those things easy to find.

04
Patterns across the bid

Repeated issues such as vague evidence, assumptions, weak outcomes, inconsistency or answers that never quite got specific enough.

05
Anything the buyer shared about the wider result

Where available, we can factor in moderation notes, ranking, relative scores, debrief notes or other context supplied by the buyer.

What you leave with

A much clearer idea of what to keep, fix and stop overthinking

The point is not to produce another document nobody looks at. We turn the result into a short, usable set of lessons for the next opportunity.

What worked

The things worth repeating because they built confidence or clearly landed with the evaluator.

What weakened the bid

The areas most likely to have affected scoring, with the reason they mattered.

What to change next time

Specific actions for writers, reviewers and the wider bid process, rather than vague advice to “add more detail”.

What not to overreact to

Feedback that needs context, comments that may be very opportunity-specific and areas that do not justify rebuilding your whole approach.

We do not treat every comment the same

Some feedback is a lesson. Some of it needs context.

Evaluator comments can be useful, but they are not always a perfect instruction manual for the next bid. Part of the debrief is working out what deserves action and what should stay specific to that opportunity.

Clear scoring issue

The evaluator identifies something that was absent, unclear or insufficiently evidenced and the submitted answer supports that reading. This is usually worth fixing.

Opportunity-specific feedback

The comment matters for this buyer or this contract, but turning it into a blanket rule for every future tender could make your bidding worse rather than better.

Feedback that needs challenging

Sometimes the comment appears inconsistent with the answer or the published criteria. We can flag that distinction and help you decide whether there is anything sensible to do with it.

How it works

A proper look at the result, without turning it into a post-mortem

01

Send us the bid and result

We need the submitted responses, scoring and feedback, plus the tender documents that explain how the answers were evaluated.

02

We review it together

We compare the buyer’s feedback with what was actually submitted and look for the issues and patterns that matter.

03

We talk it through

You get a focused debrief session where we explain what we found and answer the questions that have been circling since the result landed.

04

You leave with next actions

We turn the analysis into a short set of practical lessons your team can use on the next opportunity.

You do not have to lose to learn from a result

Winning bids are worth debriefing too

A win can hide weak answers just as easily as a loss can make a strong submission feel like a disaster. If one section scored beautifully and another scraped through, that is useful information.

Reviewing a successful bid can help you understand what should become part of your normal approach and what happened to work for that particular buyer.

Do more of what actually worked

Identify the evidence, structure and messages that gave the evaluator confidence, then make sure those lessons are not lost when the team moves straight onto the next deadline.

It is also a useful way to capture what went well while the people involved can still remember how the bid came together.

A few useful questions

Before you send the result over

It helps, but it is not essential. If you have scores, moderation comments, a debrief letter or any other buyer feedback, send it. If you only have the result and your submission, we can still review what was written and identify likely areas to learn from.

We can compare the comments with the submitted response and the published criteria and flag where something appears inconsistent. We cannot know everything that happened during moderation or guarantee that a different interpretation would have changed the award decision.

No. Successful bids often contain some of the most useful learning because you can see which answers scored strongly and where marks were still left on the table without the emotion of a loss getting in the way.

If the debrief shows a wider issue with your process, review approach, bid/no-bid decisions or team capability, we can point you towards Bid Consultancy, Bid Training or Team Development rather than trying to squeeze everything into the debrief itself.
